joule heating
Joule Heating means heating a body with the passage of an electric current through it and generation of heat in the body due to electrical resistance.
Key Features:
- Flow of electric current: When an electric current is made to pass through a conductor, resistance of the material reduces electrical energy into heat energy.
- Heat Generation Formula: The formula which is most commonly used to measure the amount of heat produced is H = I²Rt, where I = current, R = resistance, and t = time.
- Material Dependence: The generation of heat has dependence on both electrical resistivity of the material and the time for which current has been allowed to flow.
It finds ample application in electric heaters, welding equipment, and other industrial processes in which controlled heat generation is needed. This application is very important for electric furnaces and household appliances.
